When we can't be there...

Did you fall in love with Italy but for one reason or other (plus the pandemic!) you can’t be there as often as you like?  I first visited Italy as a teenager and fell head over heels for all the history, culture and pasta dishes that I experienced.

Over the years I made it my mission to return again and again to the land that I loved, determined to see and experience as much as I could. And I did! I soaked it all up, one breathtaking view, one lick of sublime gelato, one afternoon in a Medieval piazza and one bite of perfect pasta at a time.

When I returned home I started planning my next trip and then another and tried to stay in touch with the aspects of Italian culture that I loved so much - the food, the history and culture. And funnily enough I even married into an Italian family! Plus I started an Italian travel podcast.

You could say I was “all in” for Italy.

Then the pandemic hit. Right at the very time I was due to depart for a 5 week trip to Italy. We had such an adventure planned and I was so excited. The trip was supposed to take us from Bologna (for the food), the undiscovered region of Le Marche (to meet up with dear friends), down to Puglia (for the landscapes, towns… and the food!) and back up through Umbria, Tuscany and Lake Garda to meet up with more friends and immerse our family in history and culture. I even had a side trip planned to Sicily.

The world was spinning out of control and I felt like my dreams were being snatched from me. But, after a few weeks of grief and coming to terms with resting in place, I realised that there were other ways I could connect with Italy.

I spent hours scrolling Instagram, cooking Italian dishes, watching movies and listening to favorite songs from Italy. I was consuming media several hours a day and sometimes just looking at the pictures of my favorite places was making me a little sad.

And yet I still felt disconnected from the people and places I loved.

No amount of scrolling and watching movies was helping with the feeling of being disconnected from Italy. Even learning Italian was an effort.

The one thing keeping me connected to bella Italia was our Untold Italy podcast. Being able to chat regularly with friends and smiling faces from around the world who share that special bond of loving all things Italian has been a joy over this past year. So I wondered, how could I share this experience with you.
